I was talking about the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy the other day and it brought up some good discussion so I thought it would make a good blog: I was wrong.
First off, it's one of the most confusing movies of ALL time. A creative narrator's voice puts some comedy into a potentially boring topic. The first thing that happens is the annihilation of the earth. An interesting way to start a movie and a great transition from a guy who had a boring life, to a guy yanked into space as he started an adventure he didn't understand.
It's a movie where your head is completely sideways for 3/4 of the film, and the rest of the time you're trying to get a grip on what exactly is going on. There's basically three story lines going on at the same time, and 3/4 of the way through the movie you have to REALLY pay attention otherwise you could get confused as to what happened during an emotional part. The director uses the main character to kind of shade other characters throughout, making it hard to understand them from his perspective.
I'll probably go ahead and watch this again in a month or so, and have a totally different opinion of what it was/why it was made. I can't say you get something different from it every time, but you do appreciate what you got the first time more and more as you view more and more.

The Son of Odin
I think it's safe to say that the average human enjoys watching the good guy beat the bad guy right? I mean, there's some part of the human brain that is programed to enjoy justice happening. In every story there is a main character, and there is a protagonist, otherwise, it's just a documentary film about some random person that wasn't written to drop your jaw.
Well Thor came out today and I went t see it at 12 am. Seeing super hero movies at midnight is just something I've done for the longest time, I don't even remember my first one any more. But they have been getting gradually worse and it's hard to keep a tradition like that going with 10 dollar tickets. However, Thor is the first one this year and I really felt like going to the theater 2 hours early to get in line for good seats in the theater (that's a pet-peeve of mine, cant stand the bottom of a theater), watching the same stupid slides over and over again, and finally taking a 5 minute nap right before the movie starts. I also had a chance to get away to the bathroom before the previews even started! Yay. This blog's not about the experience though so...
Thor is the story of Hercules. It's amazing that all of a sudden modern movies are using kid stories in a scenario that intrigues adults so they can make all the money they need for the next one and more. It kind of disgusts me, but at the same time, I really enjoyed watching Thor throw his hammer through several heads at once. I can sit here and talk down the system all day, but the truth is, I enjoyed Avatar, I enjoyed Transformers, and I enjoyed Thor. The scenario/effects they can use to intrigues adults now really peak my interest. But I do know that there is a fine line between something like Thor and Inception, or the Source Code. Those movies stand out among the rest not because of their effects, but because they are not a children's story. They are original stories that make the jaw drop for the right reasons, not because something blows up and glass shatters everywhere.
Today, I will not tell you to go see Thor, I can tell you to go see just another piece of the Avenger's puzzle so that you're up to pace with that, and I could also tell you to go see a movie with Natalie Portman cause she's easy on the eyes, but I won't. I like her as the respectable actor she's grown into over the past few years, but she's used as tool to get someone like me to be interested in the movie that much more, she's not in it as a pivotal character, or because she's a good actress, she's there just to be there. Good for her, bad for us.
This coming summer movies are all movies that look promising, but be warned, my guess is that this will not be the only disappointing blog post of the summer.

The American Captain
Okay so I had a poll on the blog about what future movie looks best and Captain American won, so I figured I would blog about how it looks and ponder what it's gonna look like.
It used to be when a super hero movie could just been seen and it would automatically be enjoyed. I mean, it was a about a superhero! Like the first Spiderman, X-men, or Blade. Nowadays, stuff like G.I. Joe or Fantastic 4 get criticized for just being a movie about a comic. They simply just can't be enjoyed without an amazing plot that knocks the socks off anybody.
However, this summer's series of movies like Thor, Captain America, or the newest extension of the X-men series show amazing promise with a public that's eager for more movies after a drought of nothing but Drama, comedy, and horror. Finally the public is getting a group of action and adventure it hasn't been satisfied with in a long time.
But to touch on what I can about Captain America based off a 2 and a half minutes of introduction to The First Avenger. Which is topic of it's own: A new series about the Avengers from a vast variety of comics. But anyway, Captain America is played by Chris Evans who is normally a huge dude, but technology isn't about to disappoint, for using some amazing tool they do, they've got him looking like he weighs like 80 pounds at the beginning, but then in the trailer it shows them doing an operation on him (not too much different from the one in the X-men movie about Wolverine) and he gains like 200 pounds!
Also, based off the trailer, it looks like they've done a pretty good job making his shield believable. As it is a boomerang/lethal weapon/greatest defensive tool ever. Which is kind of his super power since he really doesn't have any others, but yet, he's a superhero.
Anyway, I'll watch a movie soon and post it up as soon as possible. Keep yours eyes wide, and stay tuned!!

"Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes." Jim Carrey
Okay so my guess is that most of you haven't heard of series, "The Last Airbender" If you haven't, it's not that big of a deal. Most TV series take up time, and something like this is quite addictive and can take you from other things more important. My advice would be to wait till you have at least a month of have the work you normally have and kill the whole series. If you don't like TV series, they actually originated from a series of books, so you could technically read them and enjoy what you've been missing. If neither of the above apply to you, a guy named M. Night Shyamalan did his attempt at the series with a movie to represent the first of three books.
Let me tell you right from the start, if you thought Twighlight was a desecration to a book, ha, it's about half as bad as this failure was. Nevertheless, is have a group, or even a friend that you watch a garbage movie with to make fun at it, this is the perfect movie with the most ridiculas dialague perfect for insults.
Now this is not to say don't see this movie, I don't think there would ever be a case I would say don't see this movie. Because every movie has a purpose, and you can either find that purpose and be interested, or you can find ridiculasness in that purpose and critique it with your own thoughts. Whether or not you think it possible, critiquing a movie is a great way to exercise your brain and practice developing your own ideas, a great tool for writing in late high school and even college.
In this film, there is so much room for critiques it almost becomes your own by the time your done. But with that it just shows how creative you can get, cause the better you make that film with your own thoughts, the more your working that part of your brain.
I figured I would go ahead and blog about it cause it's not something most do: watch awful movies. Most avoid because of a waste of time, but when your chillin with your pals, and working that brain, I'd say that's a good way to spend an afternoon or evening. So don't stick up your nose up at the next awful movie you hear about, perk those years up and start training your brain. It's something I've been using Netflix for (Netflix=AMAZING), cause there are endless awful movies you can simply stream with it's plan. No Netflix? Find someone who has it!

"There is no such thing as a smooth road with a bumpy one to compare it to"
I realize that recently I've been blogging about some of the more recent films to hit the theaters, so I thought I'd go old school with something less up to date. But as I thought about it, I started thinking of stuff like star wars or star trek, and even the lord of the rings trilogy. These are all series that I remember enjoying as they were released (Not so much star trek, that's just a little older than me) a while back. But then as I thought ( I do think), there are unfortunate ones who did not grow up the way I did, and maybe don't even know what Star Wars really is.
It's a really sad fact that something like star wars can be forgotten through a single generation, while something like transformers is all the rage in the sci-fi world of movies. I like that Star Trek is re-inventing their series with a twist to not only make it more fascinating for people who are not completely controlled by sci-fi, but because their releasing their movies with the technology it asks for.
Now, George Lucas prolly rings a bell with most of you, for those of you who it doesn't, he is basically the reason star wars exists, he also made an extremely popular series called indiana jones. Now I know as I mentioned the downfall of star wars and the new uprising of star trek, the thought of re-doing star wars might have popped into your head. So to kill that thought I'll be using the most recent Indiana Jones movie as evidence why it's a bad idea.
Indiana Jones is first and foremost a great series: attractive to guys because Indi is a guy who single handily takes down ten guys with a whip and gets the girl all at the same time, and also attractive to girls because first of all, it's harrison ford, what girl is gonna change the channel from that??? But also because of the historical facts thrown into each of the films that makes Indi's detective work so interesting. Now the only problem is, the series was a trilogy, the closure at the end of the third movie left the audience satisfied but yet, yearning for more.
Towards the end of the first decade of the 21st century however, something changed. As i sat anxious for Transformers to finally start, I saw the whip and the boots. I was shocked, one little teaser trailer changed my view on the entire Indiana Jones series. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was set to be released May 22 of 2008. It was madness, after about 10 years of silence from Indi, he was suppose to return as a 60 year old guy who could STILL take down 10 guys with his whip. The concept shown in later trailers showed promise, and as people started to take the thought of the movie seriously, people also began to ask why, why all of sudden bring back a dead series with only a connection to very first film? Money obviously, but it more than that. Indiana Jones, and star wars weren't the only things that died when they ended, A little bit of George Lucas went with both of them. His two big money makers were gone, and he had almost nothing left.
So he brought back his invincible womanizer to get him some fast cash. Little did the audience know, the movie was just another way of Lucas spitting in the face of his fans. Of course, for anyone who's still curious, I'm not going to ruin it for you, but good luck not crying by the end. \
So there you have it, a full look into why star wars can't be done again, Star Trek works because of the big black hole, star wars doesn't have that, star wars doesn't have an alternate reality, star wars is a one time thing, and even if George Lucas was thrown aside and someone bought the rights and retried, what kind of Star Wars fan would see someone else's take on the series, what could they do to it without killing the Star Wars George Lucas created?
Do you feel like watching the original star wars now? I hope so, it's a good series with bad acting, enjoy!

"That's what perseverance and mental toughness are all about -- how you respond to negative times."
It wasn't until this year that I really admired and watched out for good quotes. Therefor, beware what you say, because either 1: I'll hear it, or 2: It'll end up on the internet and I'll read it. In all to say, I've begun to really listen hard to what people are saying in order to find a valuable quote that will inspire me throughout my life.
The same goes for when I watch movies, you'll find that in most movies there is a specific line or quote that is repeated throughout the film to re-state a point or to reinforce one. So why not look out for that??? I mean, that one word or line could be the reason for the making of the film in the first place, that's a major thing to look out for.
So this blog is about The Source Code, and therefor, will blow your mind. No but really, I saw this about a week after it came out, and was led to believe it would be somewhat like the trailer depicts it, but as I was watching, I was happily surprised it wasn't. While it looked interesting and it had a new concept, it has an unbelievably unique plot that would impress the pants off of any movie goer looking for something fresh and fad. Excuse my attempt to demonstrate enthusiasm through blog, if you haven't notice it's not really my thing.
Anyway, a couple blogs ago I touched on the fact that Inception is referenced in many of my blogs, partly because it was an idol I struggled with for awhile, and partly because it has raw material worth referencing. And what do you know, I've got another little reference here for you.
So in Inception, the script and visual images show and tell us that this little machine with a button in the center puts people out cold in a heartbeat. This along with a couple of other things, are the flaws to the movie. The script just didn't have the time it needed to fully develop and give the info most watchers wanted.
Now with The Source Code, it starts out similarly. The watcher is given signs that this machine in the film takes someone back in time for only 8 minutes and then time is up and they die. The difference is with this one is that instead of just giving the watcher that fact, that have a character come to the rescue and explain how it works and operates. A conversation not for the faint hearted unfortunately as it is some pretty advanced and technical stuff. But if I could follow it, who couldn't?
Now there's not actually that much that I can tell you about the film without spoiling it (background computer choir) "Awwwwwwwww" But I can tell you if you've found that you agree with 75% of the crap posted here, then you have a 67.39% chance of agreeing with me about this film.
The film shows the characteristics of a hard and persevering worker with a task that at first seems unmanageable. Let me just say that I would gladly pay 10.50 or even more to see this film again. So next time you're at a theater do me a favor and be a good steward with your money: see THIS movie.
P.S. Quick shout out to the poor, needy people and families of Japan as they suffer through even more earthquakes recently. Keep them in your prayers. Hopefully they'll find the courage to persevere.

"There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion"
Okay, let me just say that after reading about Winston Churchill, I do not want to be Winston Churchill, I just want to be able to speak my original words like him.
So I had to decide on whether to blog about The Fighter, or Sucker Punch. Earlier today I was in a bad mood and I thought trashing Sucker Punch would lift my spirits, but then I thought The Fighter has been out for longer and deserves the blog, whereas Sucker Punch has been out for less than a week and was not even half as good as The Fighter. It was a really hard decision, so I did what anyone with a blog named For Movie Lovers would do, I decided to blog on them both at the same time.
This will be my first time blogging on difference/comparison in movies, so bare with me. Not only is comparing movies something I'd usually advice against, these two movies have almost nothing in common, one's a modernized Rocky, and the other a teenage guys dream after falling asleep to too much video games.
Okay, so I'll go ahead and start by informing that The Fighter is about a boxer who is trying to get a name for himself but is struggling due to lack of proper training and good management. Sucker Punch is about a girl in an Mental Hospital who is fantasizing about being a prostitute who dreams about being a warrior fighting Nazi robots.
One thing that the two movies do have in common is that both of the main characters' goal is to escape. He trying to escape a life of nothing, and she is trying to escape coming in contact with a High Roller. Don't get the impression I thought Sucker Punch was a pointless waste of time, Sucker Punch is a movie that is mildly entertaining and a great way to make other movies look good. I'm also not saying Sucker Punch is one of the worst movies ever, I'm just mad about the whole thing cause I spent 10 and a half dollars on it when I should've done my research to avoid it all together till the dollar theater.
Now The Fighter on the other hand, was a boxing movie: pause, I just have to point out that in my opinion movies about boxing, alien invasions, or Jane Austen type romantic stories are all categories that have the same premise but are done by directors differently with certain twists and turns that make them original. Okay The Fighter was a boxing movie that was only partly about boxing. The audience has to decide why they're watching it, my take on the film was that it was not made for people to only go and see Marky Mark without a shirt hitting people in the face over and over again. It was to show a story of a very interesting but messed up family.
The other thing a watcher must do with this film is to decide who the main character is, obviously most that see it are going to automatically think Mark is the main character, but as I watched it, I saw Christian Bale's character act and knew he was the main character. The movie was about him, his drug problem, and his recovery. Mark's storyline was alongside of that effecting his brother in different ways that changed him for the better.
This is also somewhat similar to Sucker Punch in the way that Sucker's Punches main character turns out to not be the point of the movie. The whole point of the movie is so that she can escape (or at least that is what the audience is shown) but in the end it wasn't about her, it was about a fellow prostitute that she needed to help. My favorite thing about the movie is that it open with a dark screen and a voice saying "Everyone has a guardian angel, they appear in ways we can never realize, and their forms change all the time" That was paraphrased but essentially that's what it said, and just like a well written essay, this thesis is revived again at the end of the movie as the main character realizes she is the guardian angel and that she was meant to be at the hospital to help her friend escape.
$10.50 is a lot to spend on a movie you don't get too much out of, but if you were to ever see it, I believe Sucker Punch has value to one not looking for action, and to one who is.
$0.00 is not a lot to spend on a very good movie, and I hope you will get the chance to watch and observe The Fighter like I did.

Okay, so I'll go ahead and start by informing that The Fighter is about a boxer who is trying to get a name for himself but is struggling due to lack of proper training and good management. Sucker Punch is about a girl in an Mental Hospital who is fantasizing about being a prostitute who dreams about being a warrior fighting Nazi robots.
One thing that the two movies do have in common is that both of the main characters' goal is to escape. He trying to escape a life of nothing, and she is trying to escape coming in contact with a High Roller. Don't get the impression I thought Sucker Punch was a pointless waste of time, Sucker Punch is a movie that is mildly entertaining and a great way to make other movies look good. I'm also not saying Sucker Punch is one of the worst movies ever, I'm just mad about the whole thing cause I spent 10 and a half dollars on it when I should've done my research to avoid it all together till the dollar theater.
Now The Fighter on the other hand, was a boxing movie: pause, I just have to point out that in my opinion movies about boxing, alien invasions, or Jane Austen type romantic stories are all categories that have the same premise but are done by directors differently with certain twists and turns that make them original. Okay The Fighter was a boxing movie that was only partly about boxing. The audience has to decide why they're watching it, my take on the film was that it was not made for people to only go and see Marky Mark without a shirt hitting people in the face over and over again. It was to show a story of a very interesting but messed up family.
The other thing a watcher must do with this film is to decide who the main character is, obviously most that see it are going to automatically think Mark is the main character, but as I watched it, I saw Christian Bale's character act and knew he was the main character. The movie was about him, his drug problem, and his recovery. Mark's storyline was alongside of that effecting his brother in different ways that changed him for the better.
This is also somewhat similar to Sucker Punch in the way that Sucker's Punches main character turns out to not be the point of the movie. The whole point of the movie is so that she can escape (or at least that is what the audience is shown) but in the end it wasn't about her, it was about a fellow prostitute that she needed to help. My favorite thing about the movie is that it open with a dark screen and a voice saying "Everyone has a guardian angel, they appear in ways we can never realize, and their forms change all the time" That was paraphrased but essentially that's what it said, and just like a well written essay, this thesis is revived again at the end of the movie as the main character realizes she is the guardian angel and that she was meant to be at the hospital to help her friend escape.
$10.50 is a lot to spend on a movie you don't get too much out of, but if you were to ever see it, I believe Sucker Punch has value to one not looking for action, and to one who is.
$0.00 is not a lot to spend on a very good movie, and I hope you will get the chance to watch and observe The Fighter like I did.
